STYLE & STORIES PORTRAIT PORTFOLIO: Catherine
BY ERIKA
Catherine Poole is a trichologist and if you are wondering what on earth that is, that was my first reaction too when we first met.
A trichologist, she explained, is someone who encourages hair and scalp health and treats hair loss and baldness.
Catherine who trained in the United Kingdom, is based at HairOptions in Somerset West and uses non-surgical and laser procedures to restore ones crowning glory to its former glossy and abundant state.
From these gorgeous images of Catherine with her healthy head of hair, it is clear that she is a walking advertisement for her profession.

FLASHBACK # 3: Classic On Main / 2010
BY MARTIN
It is a while since sheet metal shaper and teacher, Barry Ashmole of The Garage in Stellenbosch said good bye to this beauty. But since then other classic cars in need of custom-made parts have found a place in his workshop on Blaawklippen Road.
This image was taken at the petrol garage on Main Road, Strand early one morning on our way to a photo shoot in Pringle Bay area.

STYLE & STORIES PORTRAIT PORTFOLIO: Lanel
BY ERIKA
Dancer by night (or day)
and business woman by day (or night).
Always enthusiastic, innovative
beyond belief but at the same time well-prepared and professional, Lanel Van
der Kolff very successfully juggles being the ringmaster as well as performer with
The Psychedelic Theatre, a performance arts group from Stellenbosch.
And I think, it is exactly this
combination of passion and poise that Martin’s studio portraits of Lanel captured.
We have been fortunate to
work with Lanel and her team of dancers, fire dancers, stilt walkers, mimes, puppet
masters, magicians, jugglers and physical theatre performers on a few occasions.
And we will again at fashion show gala event for the Save the Tie, Save a Child
project at the end of June.
Lanel who trained with contact
improvisation dancer Sam Pienaar at the University of Stellenbosch founded The
Psychedelic Theatre around 2009 with actor Marvin-Lee Beukes.
Since then they have danced
their way to trance parties, raves,
street festivals, corporate gigs, weddings and birthday
parties as well as a full-length theatre show! At the end of 2012 The
Psychedelic Theatre even presented Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream at
the Taal Monument in Paarl, complete with fire dancing, narration and
spectacular costumes.
To book The Psychedelic
Theatre for an event, festival or party, call Lanel Van Der Kolff at 079 148
1933 or email her at psychedelictheatre@yahoo.com or visit their Facebook page.

STYLE & STORIES PORTRAIT PORTFOLIO: Misha
BY ERIKA
Two things come to mind when I recall
my first meeting with Misha at Merissa Slingerland’s art school in Strand a few
years ago.
The first is how beautiful she looked
in the black coat and the cherry red beret on that winter’s night.
And the second is the way she speaks
what she thinks, a trait that might grate or charm but I love her for it because it
doesn’t take long to get to know Misha for who she really is – a charming but complex
combination of quixotic romanticism and ambition, compassion and determination.
And she is funny, very funny!
As owner of the Tre Joli Beauty and Wellness Clinic in Strand, Misha also she gives the best facials I have ever
experienced! Call her and feel for yourself.

BUSINESS PORTRAIT # 3 A Message on Mothers Day
BY ERIKA
When Martin and I started talking about which image to use on social
media for Mothers Day, I immediately recalled the portrait we did for the very resilient
and enterprising mother-and-daughter team of one of the greatest business assets
of the Overberg region.
In 1993 Ilse Appelgryn started Kapula, a free trade enterprise that specialises in handcrafted candles and ceramics, and distributes from
the tip of Africa to across the world. About four years ago after completing
her studies and gaining experience with a top retail company Anke joined as assistant creative director.
It is some time since we spent two wonderful days photographing the Kapula
people, products and processes for their website.
But these touching images of mother
and daughter bantering and laughing while posing for their professional
portraits, remain some of my favourite shots of that assignment.
And the perfect message for Mothers Day.

FLASHBACK # 1 Shannon / 2012
BY MARTIN
Sometimes on a studio shoot, in between wardrobe changes you see a shot that just works.
Like this one of Shannon with the light streaming in from outside. Couldn't have lighted the image any better.

HAIR SHOOT FOR SALON ELAN, SOMERSET WEST: Like a drop of ink in a glass of milk
BY MARTIN
Like a drop of ink in a glass of milk.
Like a drop of ink in a glass of milk.
The words of Thirity Umrigar’s from her novel The Space Between Us, keep
popping into my head when I look at this image.
Opposites. Black and white. Sultry and sweet.
A hair style that entangle and a teddy bear tattoo.
It all flows together in this striking hair style created by Rene Erwee
of Salon Elan in Somerset West for model, Stephanie.
